Ottolenghi Islington
A North London family rite of passage — Saturday brunch at Ottolenghi Islington is the definition of a great family morning.

Cafe Mandalay is a small Hoxton caff where owner Cho serves authentic Burmese home cooking alongside full English breakfasts from the board. Ask for the separate Burmese menu and you'll find tea leaf salad, mohinga fish noodle soup, and coconut chicken curry—all made in-house, portions generous enough to share. The tea leaf salad comes mild or with chilli, layered with crispy beans and cabbage; regulars rave about the pork with soy bean paste and the chickpea tofu cakes. "Takes you to streets of Yangon in moments," says one fan who lived in Myanmar. Reviewers note that Cho guides first-timers through the menu, and there's space for buggies in the simple, homely room. Finish with sanwinamakin coconut semolina cake if they've baked it that day. A five-minute walk from Old Street, best for weekday lunch.
