Bonnington Cafe and Community Centre sits tucked away in a quiet Vauxhall cul-de-sac, run by a rotating cast of local cooks who each bring their own menu — think Syrian mezze on Fridays, Victoria's carrot fritters and spinach roulade on Saturdays, Arfa's generous pakora and home-style spreads on Wednesdays. Everything's vegetarian or vegan, with much of it made from scratch including the ice cream, and you book by calling whichever neighbour is cooking that night. "Coming here was like being able to eat the food you might spend all day making yourself for your friends with love and care," one regular writes. The space opens onto a community garden with swings and leafy trees, highchairs and buggies fit easily, and the whole thing runs on a co-owned lottery grant model that keeps mains well under £10. Reviewers return for Misiek's vegan apple and rhubarb crumble, Utopia's rose lemonade, and the feeling of eating round someone's kitchen table.
